Salary:  Master Pay Scale Point 5 ($18,965 per month) to Master Pay Scale Point 8 ($22,895 per month)

Entry Requirements:  Candidates should have –

  1. completed Secondary 3, or equivalent;

  2. attained a level of proficiency in English Language equivalent to Secondary 3 standard and in Chinese Language equivalent to Primary 6 standard;

  3. at least one year's relevant laboratory experience; and

  4. a pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test.

[Note: Candidates will be required to pass a trade test.]

Duties: A Laboratory Attendant is mainly deployed on –

  1. disinfecting and cleansing of laboratory facilities, assisting professional and technical staff in preparing for and performing laboratory tests, preparing simple reagents and processing laboratory forms / items;

  2. receiving, sorting, labelling and preparing specimens for further processing and disinfecting potentially infectious laboratory waste before subsequent disposal;

  3. assisting in indoor and outdoor operations including disinfestations of pests and regular maintenance of equipment and materials for pest control operation, laboratory equipment and tools, conveyance of gas cylinders, and disposal of wastes and laboratory wares;

  4. collecting specimens / samples from the field for tests or examination in the laboratory; and

  5. handling, including breeding, killing and taking care, of laboratory animals and their bodies in the laboratory and the field as instructed.

[Notes: A Laboratory Attendant is required to work irregular hours and shifts, and 45 hours net per week; attend duties during typhoons and other emergencies; work outdoors and in fields, including rugged and/or pest infested areas, as part of the duties; and is subject to posting and transfer at the discretion of the Department.]

Terms of Appointment: A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years.  Upon passage of probation bar, he/she may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms. 

Basic Law and National Security Law Test: 
All applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their knowledge of the Basic Law and the National Security Law.  A pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test is an entry requirement for all civil service jobs. Only those candidates who have passed the Basic Law and National Security Law Test will be considered for appointment.  For candidates who have not taken the relevant Basic Law and National Security Law Test or have not attained a pass result in the relevant Basic Law and National Security Law Test at the time of application, they may still apply for the job and arrangements will be made for them to take the relevant Basic Law and National Security Law Test during the recruitment process.

Applicants should send a completed application form [G.F. 340 (Rev. 7/2023)] obtainable from any Home Affairs Enquiry Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department or any Job Centres of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department, or downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau's website (http://www.csb.gov.hk) and specify "Application for the post of Laboratory Attendant" on the envelope to the contact address below.  The closing date for application is 5 July 2024 or postmarked on 5 July 2024 (Note: the postmark date on envelope will be regarded as the only valid date of application).  On-line application can also be made through the Civil Service Bureau's website (http://www.csb.gov.hk) on or before 5 July 2024.  

The new version of application form for Government jobs [G.F. 340 (Rev. 7/2023)] has been in use with effect from 26 July 2023.  If candidates submit the old version form, they will be required to fill in the new form [G.F. 340 (Rev. 7/2023)] afresh and submit it within seven days upon request.  If candidates fail to submit the new form [G.F. 340 (Rev. 7/2023)] within the stipulated deadline, their applications will not be processed further.

Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions / Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply, but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications.

To avoid delayed or unsuccessful delivery of applications and / or supporting documents by post, please ensure that the correct address is clearly printed or written on the envelope and sufficient postage has been affixed before posting.  Mail items bearing insufficient postage will not be delivered to this Department and will be returned to the sender or disposed of by the Hongkong Post, where appropriate.  Applicants will bear any consequences arising from paying insufficient postage.

Applications which are incomplete, or late, or not made in the prescribed form, or submitted by fax or e-mail, or without photocopies of the supporting documents and transcripts, will not be considered.  Specifically, applications without sending photocopies of the supporting documents and transcripts on or before 12 July 2024 will be regarded as incomplete and not be considered.  Applicants should provide all necessary information to show that they meet the entry requirements for the post.

For purposes of contact and notification, applicants are required to state e-mail addresses in the application forms.  Applicants who are selected to sit for trade test / interview will normally receive an invitation by e-mail in about sixteen weeks from the closing date for application.  Those who are not invited for the trade test / interview may assume that their applications are unsuccessful.
