Alternative Means of Disposal of Ashes
Apart from purchasing or renting private niches, members of the public may consider the following options to dispose of ashes:
- FEHD is currently managing 12 gardens of remembrance in 8 columbaria. The gardens of remembrance have scenic and tranquil settings and are decorated with seasonal flowers regularly. Members of the public may perform memorial rituals and scatter the ashes of their beloved ones at the gardens of remembrance by themselves or with the help of dedicated staff of FEHD. This service is free of charge. They may also mount memorial plaques at the gardens of remembrance.
- For details, please visit the FEHD webpage。
- Members of the public can create memorial webpages for their lost loved ones at the Internet Memorial Service (www.memorial.gov.hk), a free memorial website provided by FEHD, and pay tribute to them at any time and from anywhere. Users can design the memorial webpages, furnish the webpages with stories, photos and videos of the deceased, express condolences, give electronic offerings, etc.
- Members of the public may use the free ferry service for scattering ashes at sea provided by FEHD. A funeral director is on board to assist family members and friends during memorial ceremonies, and facilities are provided to accommodate different religious rituals.
- Members of the public may also apply to FEHD for arranging on their own the scattering of ashes in the 3 designated areas in Hong Kong waters.

- FEHD has since 2 January 2014 relaxed the arrangement of placing additional cremated ashes into public niches, including (1) relaxation of the definition of “close relative”; and (2) if applicant prefers, each standard niche and large niche may deposit more than two and four sets of cremated ashes respectively.

- Temporary Storage Service for Cremains in government facilities is a transitional arrangement. The cremains of any person meeting concerned criteria are eligible to apply for being kept in the temporary storage facility for cremains of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD). At present, the temporary storage facility for cremains in Kwai Chung Crematorium is limited to storage of cremains bags only (cinerary urns are not accepted) while the temporary storage facility in Wo Hop Shek Columbarium is limited to storage of cinerary urns only (cremains bags are not accepted). The storage period for application of temporary storage service for cremains, which is extendable, is either 3, 6 or 12 months. The monthly charge is $80. If necessary, the public may use the existing worshipping facilities in the columbarium near the temporary storage facility for cremains for paying tribute to their beloved ones. Besides, users of the temporary storage facility for cremains in Kwai Chung Crematorium may also use the digital worshipping facility adjacent to the New Kwai Chung Gardens of Remembrance for leaving messages on the dedicated memorial page of the deceased.

- As cremated ashes have been processed at a high temperature, they will not pose any threat to public health. Members of the public may keep no more than 10 containers of ashes in domestic premises and each container should contain the ashes of no more than one person.
