The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) provides a wide range of services from food surveillance and control to the planning and delivery of environmental hygiene services and public education on food safety and environmental cleanliness messages.

With an establishment of some 11,000, the Department delivers its services through the Centre for Food Safety, the Environmental Hygiene Branch, the Administration and Development Branch and the Private Columbaria Affairs Office.

2 January to 10 March

The first phase of the Anti-rodent Campaign 2017 is launched, targeting markets, municipal services buildings, hawker bazaars, typhoon shelters, rear lanes adjacent to food premises and other problematic spots identified in the territory.

6 January

The Centre for Food Safety releases results of a study on Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids in Food.

22 to 28 January

A total of 15 Lunar New Year Fairs are held in 13 districts.

25 January to 11 February

The Department holds Che Kung Festival Fair in Sha Tin and Lam Tsuen Fong Ma Po Fair in Tai Po.

February

13 February to 17 March

The first phase of the Anti-mosquito Campaign 2017 is launched to arouse public awareness and encourage community participation in mosquito prevention and control.

March

10 to 12 March

The Department joins the Life and Death Education Expo at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University organised by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals to promote green burials, including the scattering of ashes in Gardens of Remembrance and at sea, as well as the Internet Memorial Service.

15 March

The Centre for Food Safety releases results of a study on Sodium Content in Local Meal-on-One-Plate conducted jointly with the Consumer Council.

31 March and 7 April

The Department arranges memorial sailings during the Ching Ming Festival for members of the public to pay tribute to their loved ones whose ashes were scattered at sea.

April

24 April to 30 June

The second phase of the Anti-mosquito Campaign 2017 is launched, focusing on the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding places during the rainy season.

May

8 May to 7 July

The anti-rodent operation in designated target areas is launched in various districts to strengthen rodent prevention and control efforts at the district level and remind the public of the importance of rodent prevention and control.

27 May

Accompanied by the Under Secretary for Food and Health and representatives of the Department, members of the Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene visit the Garden of Remembrance at Wo Hop Shek Kiu Tau Road Columbarium Phase V and are briefed on the Government's efforts in promoting green burials.

June

1 June

A dedicated webpage on street bazaars in the Department website is launched to promote the culture of street bazaars in Hong Kong. Videos featuring hawkers in six hawker areas are also arranged to be broadcast on other platforms to reach a wider audience.

6 June

A three-month public consultation on the Proposed Amendments to the Food Adulteration (Metallic Contamination) Regulations commences.

30 June

The Private Columbaria Ordinance (Cap.630), which introduces a licensing scheme to regulate the operation of private columbaria, comes into effect.

July

3 July to 8 September

The second phase of the Anti-rodent Campaign 2017 is launched to sustain and consolidate the work carried out during the first phase and to enhance rodent control measures in targeted areas.

7 July

The Centre for Food Safety convenes the Food Safety Seminar for Trade 2017 to provide a forum for interactive exchange of information and views on food safety issues in Hong Kong between the Government and food trade.

7 to 9 July

The Department joins the 50+ Expo 2017 to promote green burials, including the scattering of ashes in Gardens of Remembrance and at sea, as well as the Internet Memorial Service to senior citizens.

August

2 August

The Department holds an annual forum with service contractors to promote the understanding of and compliance with tender/contract requirements.

14 August to 20 October

The third phase of the Anti-mosquito Campaign 2017 is launched to highlight the risk of dengue fever, Zika virus infection and Japanese encephalitis, and to sustain community efforts in controlling the vectors.

17, 18 and 20 August

The Centre for Food Safety holds a food safety and health talk on "Food Safety cum Hong Kong's Action on Salt & Sugar Reduction –Read Labels, Choose Smartly" at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council Food Expo 2017. Renowned chefs are invited to demonstrate how to cook with reduced salt and sugar at the "Star Chef Cooking Demonstration" sessions at the Expo.

September

8 September

A graduation ceremony is held for 315 newly recruited officers in the ranks of Health Inspector II, Assistant Hawker Control Officer and Foreman who have completed Induction Training Programmes.

11 September to 10 November

A second round of the territory-wide anti-rodent operation in designated target areas is conducted in view of the fruitful results of the special operation in early May.

29 September and 13 October

The Department arranges memorial sailings during the Chung Yeung Festival for members of the public to pay tribute to their loved ones whose ashes were scattered at sea.

October

3 October to 30 November

Special enforcement operations against the unauthorised display of easy-mount frames and other display fittings for business promotion on busy streets is conducted with a view to curbing the illegal activities and improving the district environment.

6 October

Improvement of fixed electrical installations of "Morning set-up, evening dismantle" hawker stalls in Temple Street hawker area (section between Nanking Street and Ning Po Street) to enhance fire safety is completed.

13 October

The Centre for Food Safety releases results of a study on "Microbiological Quality of Salads Available at Local Market".

20 October

The Centre for Food Safety and the Committee on Reduction of Salt and Sugar in Food (CRSS) launch the "Salt/Sugar" Label Scheme for Prepackaged Food Products on the Food Safety Day 2017 to encourage the public to select food with less salt and sugar by making reference to the labels. The prize presentation ceremony of the Smart Choices for Low-Salt and Low-Sugar Slogan Writing cum Poster Design Competition is also held on the day.

24 October

The Secretary for Civil Service visits the Department to better understand its efforts in promoting food safety and environmental hygiene. He also meets with front-line staff including those of the Hawker Control Team and the Dead Removal Team to learn more about their daily work.

November

8 November

Improvement of fixed electrical installations of "Morning set-up, evening dismantle" hawker stalls in Tung Choi Street hawker area (section between Argyle Street and Nelson Street) to enhance fire safety is completed.

15 November

The Centre for Food Safety releases results of a study on Nutrient Content of Hong Kong Style Savoury Dishes conducted jointly with the Consumer Council.

28 November

The Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, meets with the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the environmental hygiene committees of the 18 District Councils to listen to their views and suggestions on enhancing environmental hygiene in Hong Kong.

December

14 to 15 December

The Centre for Food Safety holds "Veterinary Public Health Workshop 2017". Guest speakers from France, Singapore and the United Kingdom exchange views on supply chain for foods of animal origin and one health.

19 to 20 December

The Centre for Food Safety sets up an exhibition booth at the 52nd  Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo to promote food safety and "Hong Kong's Action on Salt and Sugar Reduction – Read Labels, Choose Smartly".

20 to 21 December

The Centre for Food Safety and the Environmental Hygiene Branch of the Department actively participate in the inter-departmental exercise "Checkerboard II" which is held to test the response capabilities of the Government in dealing with a severe nuclear accident.

30 December

The Private Columbaria Licensing Board starts to receive applications for specified instruments by pre-cut-off columbaria until 29 March, 2018.
