The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) performs a wide range of duties, from food surveillance and control to the issue of licenses, including those for food business, and the provision of environmental hygiene facilities and services. It also delivers food safety and environmental cleanliness messages through publicity and education.

With an establishment of some 11,500, the Department delivers its services through the Centre for Food Safety, the Environmental Hygiene Branch, the Administration and Development Branch and the Private Columbaria Affairs Office.

The first phase of the Anti-rodent Campaign 2022 is launched, targeting at markets, municipal services buildings, hawker bazaars, typhoon shelters, rear lanes adjacent to food premises and other problematic spots.

The Department announces its plan to overhaul Lai Wan Market and to carry out minor refurbishment or improvement works for five other markets under the Market Modernisation Programme.

16 February to 5 June In response to the surging demand for cremation services since the advent of the fifth wave of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Department operates all crematoria (except Cheung Chau Crematoria) round the clock to ensure sufficient cremation sessions are available for booking.

To maintain a stable food supply in Hong Kong during COVID-19 pandemic, the Centre for Food Safety sets up 5 contingent food inspection checkpoints and a special team to fully assist the trade for importing fresh food from the Mainland to Hong Kong via the sea route.

The Department organises four online talks and webinars with relevant departments/organisation to brief the funeral trade on the precautionary measures in handling of dead bodies and to discuss how to streamline the workflow holistically, with a view to assisting the public to handle bodies of the deceased as soon as possible.

All-out Anti-mosquito Operations begins, with a view to eradicating adult mosquitoes and eliminating mosquito breeding places, thereby reducing the risk of dengue fever spreading in the community.

1 April “Online Cremation Application and Pre-paid System 2.0” is  launched to provide a faster and more convenient application process.
7 April Two new cremators at Wo Hop Shek Crematorium are commissioned ahead of schedule to alleviate the pressing need for cremation services at that time.
18 April to 17 June The second phase of the Anti-mosquito Campaign 2022 is launched, focusing on the efforts to eliminate mosquito breeding places during the rainy season.

17 to 30 June

Territory-wide Clean-up Operation is conducted in collaboration with the Home Affairs Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Housing Department to maintain a clean and hygienic environment to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, as well as support the anti-epidemic work.

The Centre for Food Safety holds briefings for undergraduate students studying public health and chemistry.  During the briefings, the role of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in food safety surveillance and control in Hong Kong is introduced.
